Giovanni Battista Ceruti (1756-1817)
Giovanni Battista Ceruti who made this violin in 1803 was the last in a long line of great Cremonese makers which can be traced to the Golden Age of violin making. It was originally thought that Ceruti learned his craft from Lorenzo Storioni, however this is now coming under scrutiny because his instruments were more neatly made and his house was not situated close to Storioni’s. Ceruti, his son Giuseppe, and his grandson Enrico all appear to have had access to various tools and patterns that were passed from Stradivari to the Bergonzi family.
Ceruti’s production was considerable with his violins always being sought after. This violin for sale is typical of Ceruti’s work and a well-preserved example.
We hope you will enjoy owning as well as playing it.
Description: The back in two pieces is made of quarter-cut maple with a medium to fine curl descending slightly from the center joint. The sides are of maple, matching that of the back. The scroll is also made of maple similar to the back. The top also crafted in two pieces is made of spruce with a fine grain broadening toward the flanks. The varnish has an orange brown color on a lighter ground.
The instrument is in a well preserved state with the top having no patches.
